Hand-Arm Vibration Testing and Training: Protecting Your Workforce from Long-Term Injury

Exposure to vibration from power tools and machinery is a daily reality for workers in construction, manufacturing, utilities, highways, landscaping, engineering and maintenance. Although this equipment is essential for many jobs, repeated or prolonged exposure can cause serious and lasting damage if the risk is not properly assessed and controlled.

At Safetymen, we help employers understand and manage these risks through practical hand-arm vibration training. Our support is designed to help businesses protect their workforce, meet their legal responsibilities and put workable control measures in place.

What is Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome?

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (usually shortened to HAVS) is associated with repeated exposure to vibration transmitted through the hands and arms when using powered tools and machinery. It can affect the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints of the hand, wrist and arm.

Warning signs can develop gradually, which means harmful exposure may continue before an employee realises there is a problem. Symptoms can include:

• Tingling or numbness in the fingers
• Loss of grip strength or reduced dexterity
• Pain or discomfort in the hands, wrists or arms
• Blanching or whitening of the fingers, often referred to as vibration white finger
• Difficulty carrying out fine or precise tasks

Exposure to vibration can also increase the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Because the effects of HAVS can be permanent, prevention, early reporting and effective risk management are essential.

Understanding Your Legal Responsibilities

Under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, employers must assess and control risks from vibration at work. This involves identifying which employees, tools and tasks may create a vibration risk, estimating or measuring daily exposure levels, and taking appropriate steps to reduce exposure wherever reasonably practicable.

Employers are also responsible for assessing vibration magnitude and actual trigger time, ensuring employees do not exceed the Exposure Limit Value (ELV), and providing suitable information, instruction and training to anyone who may be affected. In addition, organisations should regularly review the effectiveness of their control measures, maintain accurate records, and implement health surveillance programmes where the risk assessment indicates they are necessary. By taking a proactive approach, employers can protect their workforce while demonstrating compliance with legal requirements.

Why HAV Testing Matters

Testing identifies where the risks are, but training helps managers, supervisors and employees act on that information. Workers need to understand that safe exposure is based on actual trigger time, not simply the length of a shift or the time spent holding a tool that is switched off.

Effective HAVS awareness training can help employees recognise early symptoms, follow site controls, use tools correctly and report concerns before avoidable harm occurs. It also helps supervisors monitor working practices and reinforce the organisation’s vibration control arrangements.

How Safetymen Can Help

"Too often, we see businesses underestimate the risks associated with hand-arm vibration because the effects can take years to become apparent. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms develop, the damage is often permanent and can have a significant impact on an employee's health, wellbeing and ability to work.

The good news is that HAVS is entirely preventable when employers have the right information, controls and training in place. Professional vibration testing allows organisations to understand exactly where the risks exist, while effective training ensures employees recognise the dangers, work safely and report concerns at an early stage.

Safetymen work closely with businesses to take the uncertainty out of vibration management. Whether you need a one-off assessment, support with compliance, employee training or ongoing consultancy, our team can help you put practical measures in place that protect your workforce and meet your legal responsibilities."
